DAoC Spotlight: Gudd the Armsman

A loyal and brave follower of the Order of Vigilance, Gudd has been exploring the Old Frontiers’ Odin’s Gate — and sharing his adventures with us.

Gudd is a level 50 Armsman of Albion who specialises in polearm combat. He’s also a skilled crafter, forging his own armour and weapons, a proud member of PrimEvil, and has been playing DAoC since 2001.

He’s been deep in the Crossroads Covenant event — especially the phase in Odin’s Gate, where he’s faced challenges and enemies from every realm. Along the way he’s documented the journey in screenshots and video. Here are some of his highlights, with excerpts straight from his diary.

Holding Castle Sauvage against a Midgard raid

The scouts alerted us that a large group of Midgardians was heading for our castle. We gathered our forces and prepared for the siege. They came with berserkers, healers and runemasters, trying to break our gates with rams and catapults. We fought back hard — archers, casters and siege weapons on the walls, and stealthers slipping behind their lines to disrupt the healers. It was a fierce battle, but we held them off and protected the keep. We cheered, celebrated, and thanked the King for his support.

Soloing a Hibernian hero in the snow

I was roaming the snowy hills of Odin’s Gate looking for action when I spotted a lone Hibernian hero — green cloak, huge axe. He looked tough, but I challenged him anyway. We saluted, drew, and circled. He swung; I rolled clear and thrust with my polearm; he blocked. We traded blows, each testing the other’s reflexes. He was a worthy adversary, but I had the reach and the power. I feinted a slash — he bought it, exposed his neck — and I switched to a stab. He dropped his axe, whispered something in Gaelic I couldn’t understand, and fell. I bowed to him, and took his cloak as a trophy.

Slaying a dragon in the Dragon’s Lair

I joined a group planning to bring down the dragon — a balanced team of tanks, healers, casters and support. We pushed through tunnels and caves, cleared the fire drakes and lava worms, and reached the main chamber where it rested on a hoard of gold and jewels. Magnificent, and terrifying: red scales, yellow eyes, fiery breath. It roared, and the battle began. It could fly, breathe fire, summon minions and cast spells, and one tail-sweep or bite could end you. We coordinated every attack and defence, used our best abilities and items, and after a long, hard fight we prevailed. We looted the hoard — dragon scales, teeth, eggs, artifacts, gold and gems — and split it among ourselves. A great day, and a great adventure.

Sending a lurikeen into orbit at Odin’s Gate

I was patrolling the border when a small figure darted through the trees — a lurikeen, brown tunic, green hat, bow and dagger. Harmless-looking, but I knew better; they’re cunning and vicious, using size and speed to ambush. He shot arrows that bounced off my armour and tried to hide behind a rock. I cornered him. He drew his dagger; I laughed, grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up. He begged for mercy. I showed none — threw him into the air, swung my polearm, and hit him clean like a baseball. He flew higher, vanished into the sky, and somewhere far off I heard the thud. I grinned, and spat on the ground.

Why he still plays from time to time

Gudd says he loves DAoC for the community, the RvR, and the nostalgia. He’s made countless friends and memories over the years, and still finds new things to do and see. He’s looking forward to the upcoming events and updates — and hopes to see more players join and experience the fun the game still has to offer.

We’d like to thank Gudd for sharing his story and his adventures with us.
